Our 1st annual Holiday Gift opinion poll uncovered a costly chasm between those who give and those who receive;
The glaring double standard is that we mostly want to receive honest feedback, but we are unwilling to return the favor and actually give others this feedback.
This begs a very important question: How do we find a socially acceptable way of telling people we dont like their gift?
Our survey indicated that 68% of gifts were inspired by conversations with friends, thus our inability to be honest perpetuates the great re-gifting cycle. A complex bluffing game exists below the surface resulting in a mountain of wasted resource that fuels the e-Bay/re-gifting economy.
Our survey estimated each person gave $250 of unwanted gifts this Holiday and found 35% of gifts were unloved and that each person spent a little over $750. The lifetime cost per person of bad giving is $8,000 just on Holiday gifts alone.
Gift giving isn’t just reserved for the holidays. When you think about it we waste money through out the year.
How are we going to narrow the Gift Gap and rid the world of unwanted gifts? Are you ready willing and able to give honest feedback next time you receive a gift? How will you begin conversations that reveal your passions that lead to better gifts?
With Valentines Day only weeks away we don’t have long to wait to put your honesty to the test.
The poll is still running with over 8,500 responses from over 850 respondents so far.
Surveys have always been a good way to attract media attention, or thats the way the theory goes.
Have you ever tried to create a survey? Our Gift Giving poll was my first ever poll and I found it much harder than I’d expected. Clearly the author of every poll has an agenda and a message they want to air through the poll. Creating a collection of interesting and controversial questions is hard questions that people will answer and that the media may pick up on.
I brainstormed a few question ideas and searched existing surveys for ideas, but it wasnҒt easy. The good news about running a poll from your website is that its super easy to edit or drop a question or a response, but it was still really hard to create an interesting poll. I found us quickly dropping questions that didnt generate a variety of opinion.
While working on the poll I came up with the idea of sharing the results with other companies that share an interest in the subject of your poll, albeit a different slant. This approach proved to be highly effective. Its a simple win-win proposition - you host the survey and share the results and your partner companies can;
Its a good deal for lots of reasons, but my favorite one is that your poll gets to have multiple perspectives and to garner many more votes and much more credibility. With so many polls out there, today you need something a more credible to stand out and really grab attention.
Our poll wasnҒt perfect. I wish it was asynchronous and didnt refresh the page every time you vote (I used a module called EE Poll which is integrated into Expression Engine, which is the platform used to build this website). Overall were very happy to have created, managed and run a poll with over 8.500 responses over a matter of weeks.
Ive got to make special thanks to Used Canada and Deep Fun for their help in contributing both traffic and content for our poll.
We’re beginning the second phase of the project and trying to use the content to connect with the media and bloggers, but figured it was a good idea to share progress on phase 1.
PS If you’d like to join in a future poll or you’d like us to share in one of yours let us know. We’d be happy to help.
I came across a new book that I’m waiting to arrive at my local book store.
It’s called “Made to Stick” and I first found out about it here with an interview with the authors by Guy Kawasaki
It looks like it could provide some great insight into what makes things Viral.
Why is it all my favorite books are orange?
I was surfing late last night and I suddenly spotted something different down on the toolbar. A belated gift from Santa. Our Page Rank had jumped from 5 to 6.
What was amazing was as I jumped from page to page the rankings of so many pages had jumped and many pages were at 6 including a page that’s only 1 month old - our Holiday Gift Poll page. I can’t find one reference to this page on the web. It searches well, but there are no links back to this page. I’m not complaining, in fact I’m delighted.
So I’m wondering if there is something new I’ve not read about in the Google Algorithm? Is it somehow using Alexa-style Web Traffic? If so from where is the traffic coming from? We certainly have had a lot of hits in a short space of time on this page, but how did Google track that? We hit a peak ranking on Alexa of 64,025, not that I’m metric obsessed or anything.
It makes sense that this page has a strong rank because it’s good content, but its not been tagged or linked to as far as I’m aware. I have noticed quite a large number of hits to this page via email, so are they tracking email referrals to sites?
I was advised and had read that I should try and get links deep into my site, I’ve done nothing specific. It seemed to happen all at once and with little or no direct effort on my part.
I was reading on LinkedIn Answers yesterday a comment from Darren Barefoot. Here’s an extract…
“Whats the foolproof way to do SEO, that the search engines will always like?
* Create relevant content on your site. Blogs and forums are great ways to do this. My colleagues and I talk about the 4 C’s: create compelling content constantly.
* Engage with the online community, fostering incoming links.
* Write good copy, and uses effective (relevant) naming techniques for your files, domain, title tags, and header tags.”
This was pretty much what I thought and hadn’t really done much to just create links for the sake of links.
I’ve never heard any connection between Google and Web Traffic? Can anyone comment?
I relocated to Kelowna 3 years ago knowing it was far from easily accessible; it used to take me nearly 19 hours return from Paris.
Kelowna, located in central British Columbia Canada on lake Okanagan, has an international airport with a small iђ. Seattle, Vegas & Hawaii are the only international locations flying direct to Kelowna. Within Canada you can fly direct from Vancouver, Edmonton, Victoria, Toronto and Calgary.
Kelowna is not a natural location to start a board game company. Theres not a single retailer headquartered here, no gaming events, not even a board game club! Retail here is a little behind the likes of Toronto, but IҒm pleased to say we have an awesome local toy store called Loadz a Toyz and they are doing a storm with GiftTRAP. I love Kelownas stunning lake, great scenery/vineyards and powder snow nearby,
Given thereђs no way Im leaving, I started thinking of positive things about Kelowna as a business location. Here are a few facts;
- Kelowna Region District is growing fast; population jumped from 111k to 165k from 1991 to 2006.
- Property values have jumped 23% from 2005 to 2006, making Kelowna the 2nd most expensive location in Canada behind Vancouver.
- Growth is driven by favorable living conditions, temperate climate, natural beauty and untold possibilities of future development.
- The bottom line is a high percentage of people who live in Kelowna werenҒt born here.
It occurred to me that the high migrant population in Kelowna is a real strength. Kelowna is a seriously well-connectedђ city. The people Ive met each have their own story about how they found Kelowna and they maintain their links with family and friends all over the world.
Kelowna may be inaccessible but it is a highly effective location to begin a social campaign to launch a board game and spread the story via word of mouth. Party games by definition are played with friends and family so their success is connected to their viral potential.
Through sales and promotions there are now over 400 homes in Kelowna with a copy of GiftTRAP. IҒve had lots of feedback that people have played GiftTRAP with friends and family this holiday. The Kelownaђ effect is having a big viral impact with copies reaching families in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and beyond.
Can you name another city that has more viral potential than Kelowna?
