Kelowna, November 6th 2007: There’s hardly a “geekier” place on the planet, and to a geek the term “meta gift” makes sense. It’s a gift about gifts and that’s exactly what GiftTRAP is. You may have heard of “virtual gifting” as seen on Facebook, well GiftTRAP not only precedes the whole “Virtual Gifting” trend on Facebook, it also extends the idea into a “virtual gifting game”.
With time and attention in short supply in a world overrun with choice, picking the perfect present has never been harder. Now with both an award winning board game and accompanying Web 2.0 online game (both patent pending), we can all get to learn a little more about ourselves and our friends before we go out and buy another gift destined a life of “regifting”.
This Holiday season, GiftTRAP’s creators decided that it would be fun to launch a region specific version of the game to celebrate California and all its many eclectic attractions. The new edition “GiftTRAP California” will be available online and in stores across California this Holiday Season and features many gifts from the Bay Area.
Here’s just a few examples of the gift ideas;
The connection to Silicon valley runs deeper than just a few gift ideas, GiftTRAP leverages Creative Commons licenses to source photos for the game from Flickr.com and the like. Nick Kellet, GiftTRAP’s inventor, former VP of New Initiates at Business Objects, was featured on Creative Commons blog and at their Yahoo Creative Talk in June. Nick sold his Set-Based Analysis company to Business Objects in October 1999, leaving them in 2006 to pursue his life long passion to publish a board game.
“We launched this game a year ago and have won lots of awards. To now be producing a bilingual version for California is very exciting” said Nick Kellet, “Creative Commons was at the core of our strategy to make this a social collaborative experience. We were introduced to CC’s Lawrence Lessig by one of our photo contributors Steve Jurvetson, who’s just about our most prolific photographer with 11 photos in the Californian Edition.”
Here’s a list of 65 Californians featured in the game;
About GiftTRAP:
GiftTRAP is the hilarious new game that’s taking the gaming world by storm, winning Games Magazine’s “Best Party Game of the Year 2007/2008” and 5 other awards since launching in Oct’06.
Playing starts conversations with people who think they know each other well or want to know each other better.
The goal is to really get to know your friends and family by choosing the right gifts, but most of all it’s just fun to play and gets you talking about things that matter.
Unlike other party games you don’t need skills in drawing, acting or trivia so it works well when you have a crowd of mixed ages/skills.
A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing in a virtual gift-giving game!
You are sure to learn something as you give from the 640 gift ideas from the basic to the bizarre.
Despite there being 100’s of party games, it’s rare to find one that adults and children both enjoy playing. It’s fun because everyone gets to say what he or she thinks about the gifts before they know what they have been given.
