Kelowna : More Viral Than Most

I relocated to Kelowna 3 years ago knowing it was far from easily accessible; it used to take me nearly 19 hours return from Paris.

Kelowna, located in central British Columbia Canada on lake Okanagan, has an international airport with a small iђ.  Seattle, Vegas & Hawaii are the only international locations flying direct to Kelowna. Within Canada you can fly direct from Vancouver, Edmonton, Victoria, Toronto and Calgary.

Kelowna is not a natural location to start a board game company. Theres not a single retailer headquartered here, no gaming events, not even a board game club! Retail here is a little behind the likes of Toronto, but IҒm pleased to say we have an awesome local toy store called Loadz a Toyz and they are doing a storm with GiftTRAP. I love Kelownas stunning lake, great scenery/vineyards and powder snow nearby,

Given thereђs no way Im leaving, I started thinking of positive things about Kelowna as a business location. Here are a few facts;

- Kelowna Region District is growing fast; population jumped from 111k to 165k from 1991 to 2006.
- Property values have jumped 23% from 2005 to 2006, making Kelowna the 2nd most expensive location in Canada behind Vancouver.
- Growth is driven by favorable living conditions, temperate climate, natural beauty and untold possibilities of future development.
- The bottom line is a high percentage of people who live in Kelowna werenҒt born here.

It occurred to me that the high migrant population in Kelowna is a real strength. Kelowna is a seriously well-connectedђ city. The people Ive met each have their own story about how they found Kelowna and they maintain their links with family and friends all over the world.

Kelowna may be inaccessible but it is a highly effective location to begin a social campaign to launch a board game and spread the story via word of mouth. Party games by definition are played with friends and family so their success is connected to their viral potential.

Through sales and promotions there are now over 400 homes in Kelowna with a copy of GiftTRAP. IҒve had lots of feedback that people have played GiftTRAP with friends and family this holiday. The Kelownaђ effect is having a big viral impact with copies reaching families in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and beyond.
